Audience Research

1st Research Method
 Questionnaire
As a start to our audience research we looked at various different websites which you can create questionnaires for free with ease of sending to people. Survey monkey only allowed us to create 10 questions which wasn't enough for what we needed to find out. Therefore we ended up using a website called freeonlinesurveys.co.uk which allowed what we wanted with a more flexible question layout choice.

Our Questionnaire
We did, however, have a small issue with this as we used the free premium trial which actually only let us view and fill out the questionnaires 10 days after the launch of it. This meant that we had about 25 responses which were all lost due to the expiatory, but we did actually save a digital copy. This way we could hand out the survey to boys and girls of the college but also teachers. We will then complete the results graphs on a programme like edexcel instead. This will take longer but shows that we have really engaged with out research.

We began the survey with very simple, starter questions which will give us something to refer back to when finding out who is most interested in what and how old they are so that we can work out our target audience more accurately. I think that age and gender is very important in terms of what they look for in a video and males have different ideas of what they like to see then females and we need to see what this is in order to work out whether we want to aim our video at one gender in particular or make it more neural to suite both.

although question 11 is quite a lengthy question, it will really help us when deciding the mise en scene of our video. Mainly with the props on what they think is most important in the kind of video and what we should avoid. There are some settings included within this list too which can help us when deciding if we need to travel anywhere to film but is also a big factor of what we decide out storyline will be.
We understood that not everybody buys albums, i know a lot of people that illegally downloads them or just streams them on apps such as spotify or youtube free of cost. However we still includes question 14 which asks why they would buy an album. If the album artwork turns out to be a big factor we need to make sure that our album is what they want to see. This is why we asked some of the questions we did in the last section of the questionnaire.

Question 15 is where we had a use of existing indie acoustic artist music videos. I think that this will be one of the most useful questions as it will inform us of what is effective and what kind of thing we should try and include in our album cover. Also, when placing all the albums together in this order i did notice a lot of similarities as it is - and in my separate more detailed analysis' of the album covers and backs in my previous post. Then, question 17 can mean we really get a feel of why it is people liked the album they did the most to further our understand of what to do and what to avoid.

2nd Research Method
Focus Group
The next stage of our audience research was to plan and organize a focus group where we present 3 different videos of the genre we have chosen to get feedback from a range of different individuals.

Planning our focus group:
Durning our focus group we plan to hand out some paper with a couple of questions on so that the audience can write nots on the chosen videos such as what they like and don't like and which they thought was the best video with their views behind it.

After all the videos have been shown we would like to ask the audience these questions:
  1. Which was your favorite video?
  2. Do you prefer a story, performance or a mixture? why?
  3. Do you want the storyline to work alongside the lyrics?
  4. To what extent do you like the filters in the video? (such as the faded filter on the honey trees)
  5. Which settings did you find most effective? why?
  6. in terms of editing, do you think that parts of the video in slow motion is effective?
  7. Did you think that the props in the video made a difference? (the honey trees, books etc)
We found 3 videos on youtube under our genre which show the three categories: storyline, performance and both. We will show these videos on the projector in a room while we record the responses of the questions we will ask. These are the three videos we have chosen:

Storyline: He Is We - all about us https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7Gf2SOmz5Q
Performance : Lucy Rose - Middle of the bed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adBPg8Zdp2g
storyline & performance: The Honey Trees - To Be With You https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C70SnkZETc0

Video:

In the end, we could only manage to get a group of girls ages 16 and 17 to take part in the focus group sue to the time i the day and when the boys had lessons or if teachers we teaching. This is why we have decided to create more in depth questions for an interview with two other people. This way we could ask them to go into more detail into what they think.

3rd Audience Research method
Interview

We decided to create some questions for an interview which were very similar to the focus group questions but were a lot more general and weren't focused on videos. This was in order to get some more information about what our target audience want to see and see that if there is a smaller amount of girls being filmed that they will contribute to the discussion more and provide more information than our focus group did.

Questions we asked:
  1. Do you watch indie acoustic music videos?
  2. Do you prefer a storyline, performance or mixture?
  3. Do you want the storyline to work alongside the lyrics?
  4. To what extent do you like the filters in a video?
  5. In general, what settings do you find most effective?
  6. Do you think that slow motion is effective?
  7. Do you think Props in a music video make a difference?

Added Questionnaire
A quick questionnaire to complete the digi pack section of the research

When we began to compile all our information to start our audience research section of our documentary, we realised that we had only previously asked out the album cover section of the digi pack and didn't include the poster advertisements. This is why we decided to create a quick questionnaire on a word document and hand them out to people who were 16 and 17 as we worked out this was our target audience from the first questionnaire results.

This is the questionnaire we handed out:

The results we got are shown on the next blog post with the rest of the audience research results like our focus group and interview.
